SUMMARY:NFB Movie Night: Posthumans
DESCRIPTION:The Champlain Library is partnering with the Arbor Gallery to host a special National Film Board movie night that invites viewers to think about where technology and humanity may be headed next. \nJoin us at the Arbor Gallery on Thursday\, February 5 at 6:30 p.m\, for the screening of Posthumans\, a 90-minute documentary by filmmaker Dominique Leclerc. The film is presented in both English and French\, with English subtitles. The film explores the growing world of cyborgs\, biohackers\, and transhumanists\, people who are using technology in bold and sometimes controversial ways to push the limits of the human body. \nIn Posthumans\, Leclerc’s interest in the topic is deeply personal. Having relied on medical devices for years to manage her diabetes\, she begins searching for alternative solutions and encounters a community experimenting with human enhancement to fight illness\, slow aging\, and even challenge death itself. As she goes deeper\, the film raises big questions about what these advances could mean for society as a whole. \nThe documentary doesn’t offer simple answers. Instead\, it opens the door to thoughtful reflection on the ethical\, social\, and political implications of merging technology and the human body. What does progress look like? Who has access to these technologies? And how far is too far? \nAdmission is free\, and donations are welcome. Space is limited\, so registration is encouraged. To reserve a spot\, call the library at 613-678-2216 or by visit the library’s sign up page. Everyone is welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Surviving Misinformation Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Champlain Library will host a public talk in February focused on navigating today’s increasingly complex media landscape. \nLocal journalist Philip Oddi will lead a presentation titled: Surviving Misinformation\, on Wednesday\, February 18\, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Creating Centre\, located at 11 High Street\, in Vankleek Hill. \nWith news and information readily available through television\, social media\, and online platforms\, determining which sources can be trusted has become more challenging. The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has added another layer of complexity\, making it easier for misleading or false information to spread quickly while appearing credible. \nOddi’s talk will explore how misinformation and disinformation circulate\, why they can be difficult to spot\, and what individuals can do to evaluate the reliability of what they read\, watch\, and share. Attendees will learn practical strategies for assessing source credibility\, verifying facts\, and developing the skills needed to become more critical and informed news consumers. \nThe session is designed to be accessible to a general audience and will provide tools that can be applied to everyday media consumption\, whether reading online articles\, scrolling through social media\, or viewing news coverage. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, though donations are welcome. Seating is limited\, and those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a spot by contacting the library at 613-678-2216 or clicking here.

SUMMARY:Northwest Passage Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Champlain Library will welcome the public this March for a compelling talk on the history\, challenges\, and future of Canada’s Northwest Passage.  \nHistorian David Stringer will present Canada’s Northwest Passage: Exploration\, Climate Change & a Future Global Shipping Route on Wednesday\, March 18\, beginning at 6:30 p.m. David previously gave a very well received talk on Ancient Egypt. The event will take place at the Creating Centre\, 11 High Street\, Vankleek Hill.  \nThe talk will trace the Northwest Passage from the early modern period\, when Europeans sought faster routes to the Indies for luxury goods\, to the realization that a continent lay between Europe and Asia. Attendees will learn about the explorers who charted this treacherous route\, the significance of Rupert’s Land and the Hudson Bay Company\, and the famous Franklin expedition. The presentation will highlight Amundsen’s east-to-west and Larsen’s west-to-east crossings\, as well as the discovery of Franklin’s ships Erebus and Terror.  \nIn addition to its rich history\, the session will examine the impact of climate change on the Passage and the potential for a future global shipping route\, including the legal and geopolitical challenges surrounding its ownership. The talk will also touch on the Northern Sea Route\, offering a broader view of Arctic navigation today.  \nThis free event is open to the public\, though donations are welcome. Seating is limited\, so those interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a spot online or by calling the library at 613-678-2216.
