The Champlain Library is celebrating Family Literacy Day on January 27 and throughout the week to help raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative established by ABC Literary Canada.
This year’s Family Literacy Day theme is Learning in the Great Outdoors, and the library is offering activity books with 10 activity ideas to make outdoor time a fun family learning time. Some activities include going on an outdoor scavenger hunt, creating a nature journal, making art in snow and adopting a tree to name a few.
On Tuesday, January 25, Laura Barton will be reading from her book, Wow! Big Moon! on Facebook during the Library’s Storytime at 10 am. Laura has captured her love of farming and writing in this book and currently has her own “On the Farm” column in the Review newspaper.
From January 27 to April 30, young readers with a Grade 3 to 6 reading level are invited to participate in the Silver Birch Fiction Award Program through the Forest of Reading. The Forest of Reading is Canada’s largest recreational reading program with more than 270,000 readers taking part every year through schools, public libraries, literacy centres and at home. Readers can participate in numerous activities including scavenger hunts, contests, activity sheets, letters to authors and more. What a great way for kids to have fun and to vote on their favourite titles with other kids across the country.
