The Champlain Library is pleased to announce that it is one of the successful applicants for the Sarah Badgley Literacy Fund and has received $500 to develop Discovery Kits that will engage kids and help them learn about our world.  Grants were available through the Ontario Library Association to rural public libraries and to urban public libraries that serve rural clientele. The purpose of the grant is to support children’s literacy initiatives. Since its inception in 2002, more than 60 Ontario public libraries have received grants from the Fund.

Sarah Rosalind Badgley (1998-2001) Sarah was a beautiful, bright, inquisitive, and very happy girl. Sarah never learned to read, but she adored books and loved visiting her local public library. In July 2001, at the age of three, Sarah was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Her parents, Susan and Kerry Badgley of Kemptville, Ontario, created the Fund in Sarah’s memory.

Three Discovery Kits are currently available with the themes of Yoga (bilingual), Magnets (bilingual) and Emotions (French) and include books, games/puzzles as well as challenges and DVDs. The kits are put together in a convenient tote bag that can be signed out for a one-week period by anyone with a valid Champlain Library membership card. To reserve a Discovery Kit for your child, visit the library’s website at bc-cl.ca or call 613-678-2216 and discover a new way to enjoy reading and learning!
